Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV)

Moisture protection and compact packaging is essential for space-conscious embedded underwater applications. EMCORE QMEMS and SDI-500 IMU perform with precision and provide enhanced inertial monitoring functions with excellent bias stability and repeatability. Each unit is hermetically sealed and provides accurate pitch, angle, and acceleration measurements, resulting in excellent platform stabilization characteristics. Our TAC-450 Series IMUs also support these applications.

Quartz Micro-Electro Mechanical System (QMEMS) gyroscopes and Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs) are pivotal technologies for Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUVs) navigation and stabilization. QMEMS are superior to silicon-based MEMS, yet retain their small size, low weight, and  power consumption, and are cost-effective and are commonly used in UUVs. QMEMs measure angular rates along multiple axes by detecting Coriolis forces on vibrating microstructures.

FOGs offer higher accuracy, minimal drift, and excellent long-term stability, making them ideal for high-precision UUVs and extended-duration missions. FOGs use the interference of light in fiber optic coils to measure rotation without moving parts, providing robust performance in harsh underwater environments.

Both QMEMS and FOGs enhance UUV enable autonomous stabilization, accurate trajectory tracking, and reliable control of payloads such as cameras, sensors, or manipulators. Advanced sensor fusion with accelerometers, doppler velocity logs, or sonar further improves navigation accuracy.
