Torpedo Guidance

Torpedo GuidanceTorpedoes operate in challenging underwater environments where external navigation aids such as GPS and radio signals are unavailable. Precise inertial navigation is essential for maintaining an accurate estimate of position, velocity, and orientation.  Fiber Optic Gyro’s (FOG) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) play a critical role in torpedo guidance by providing highly accurate angular rate measurements. Unlike mechanical gyroscopes, FOGs have no moving parts, relying instead on the interference of light within fiber-optic coils to detect rotation. This design offers excellent resistance to shock, vibration and pressure, key advantages for underwater weapons subjected to high launch stresses
and long-duration operation.

The most important FOG IMUs’ contribution to torpedo guidance is their low drift and high bias stability compared to Micro-Electro Mechanical System (MEMS)-based sensors. Reduced drift allows the torpedo’s inertial navigation system to maintain accurate heading and position estimates over extended ranges and time periods. This improves mid-course guidance accuracy and reduces cumulative navigation errors before terminal homing begins.

FOG IMUs also enhance guidance system reliability and longevity. Their solid-state construction results in high Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), which is critical for torpedoes stored for long periods before deployment. Additionally, the high precision of FOG sensors supports advanced guidance algorithms, such as adaptive path planning and precise depth and attitude control.

Capable of providing optimal characteristics required for proven “strap-down” technologies used in torpedo guidance systems, EMCORE’s quartz MEMS SDI-500 Tactical IMU and EN-300 FOG IMU bring previously unheard of angle random walk values as low as (0.008°/√hr.), while maintaining all expected tactical grade performance levels. Our SDD-3000 Tactical Grade Gyroscope is also a compact answer for precision single axis sensing applications. These devices offer unprecedented Gyro Bias (all causes) with excellent stability and leveraging our latest MEMS quartz tuning fork gyroscope, vibrating quartz accelerometer, and fiber optic gyro technologies. Our QRS-116 gyroscope also provides excellent bias stability, low random angle walk values and is hermetically sealed in a sub-compact housing.

Overall, the integration of FOG IMUs has significantly elevated torpedo guidance to achieve greater precision, longer effective range, and improved mission success rates – making them a cornerstone technology in contemporary naval weapon guidance systems.
