Turret Stabilization
Micro-Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) gyroscopes are vital components in turret stabilization systems – enabling accurate targeting and firing while the vehicle is in motion and maintaining precise orientation to ensure that weapons are aimed correctly.
MEMS’ small size, lightweight construction, and low power consumption allow integration into compact turret stabilization modules on military vehicles without significantly increasing system complexity or weight.
In application, MEMS are typically part of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that continuously measures angular velocity around the turret’s axes. This data is fed into the fire control and stabilization system, which calculates the necessary compensatory turret and gun movements to counteract vehicle motion keeping the gun locked on target regardless of bumps, slopes, or sudden accelerations.
MEMS also enhance automated targeting system performance by providing rapid, real-time feedback for turret rotation and gun elevation adjustments. Coupled with laser rangefinders, ballistic computers, and thermal sights, they contribute to faster target acquisition, improved accuracy, and reduced reaction times.
While MEMS exhibit higher drift than high-end Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs), advanced sensor fusion techniques and filtering algorithms mitigate these limitations to deliver reliable stabilization over extended operations.
EMCORE manufactures Quarts MEMS (QMEMS), which are much more stable and accurate than silicone-based MEMS, and preferred over FOG gyros in high-temp and high-shock applications. EMCORE’s quartz MEMS QRS-116 and QRS-28 gyroscopes, and our DSP-3000 series and EMCORE-HawkeyeTM EG-120 fiber optic gyros offer excellent low-cost solutions to tank turret position control, including azimuth and elevation, and other inertial measuring controls within the turret stabilization process. Providing high-vibration performance, low noise, and superior bias, our devices are packaged in ultra-small, hermetically sealed units. Durably designed, these miniature sensors are self-contained and provide high reliability and long-life performance characteristics.
