DESCRIPTION

Single-axis Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOG) incorporating Digital Signal Processing (DSP) electronics are particularly advantageous in applications where the gyroscope output must be transmitted over long distances. These applications include aerospace platforms, marine navigation systems, remotely operated vehicles, industrial stabilization systems, and distributed sensing architectures where the sensor and control unit are physically separated. In such environments, signal integrity, stability, and resistance to environmental disturbances are critical.

In traditional analog FOG designs, the output signal is typically an analog voltage proportional to rotation rate. When transmitted over long cables, analog signals are vulnerable to noise pickup, electromagnetic interference (EMI), signal attenuation, and ground loop effects. Additionally, analog circuitry is sensitive to temperature variations, causing drift, bias instability, and scale factor changes. These effects become more pronounced over extended distances, degrading measurement accuracy and system reliability.

By contrast, FOG systems with DSP electronics convert the photodetector signal into digital data close to the sensing element using high-resolution analog-to-digital converters. All signal processing functions—such as demodulation, filtering, phase detection, and closed-loop feedback control—are performed digitally. The resulting output is provided in a digital communication format (e.g., RS-422, CAN, Ethernet, or fiber-optic links), which is far more robust for long-distance transmission. Digital signals are less susceptible to noise, can include error detection and correction protocols, and maintain signal integrity over extended cable lengths.

Furthermore, DSP-based designs implement real-time temperature compensation and bias correction algorithms, virtually eliminating temperature-sensitive drift and rotation errors. This ensures that the transmitted data remains accurate regardless of environmental conditions.

As a result, single-axis FOGs with DSP electronics provide stable, precise, and noise-immune rotation measurements, making them ideal for systems requiring reliable long-distance signal transmission and high-performance navigation accuracy.
