SDI-170 TACTICAL GRADE INERTIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT (NON-ITAR)
Compact, Rugged Tactical Grade MEMS Inertial Measurement Unit
The SDI-170 IMU is designed as a performance-compatible inertial system that is form, fit, and functional with a legacy RLG-based IMU product, but with superior overall performance, versatility, and a significantly higher MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) rating over ruggedized environments. The tactical performance of the SDI-170 IMU is based on our mature, proven, dependable and accurate quartz MEMS inertial sensor technology in our SDI-500 tactical-grade IMU. Our quartz technology enables repeatable high-volume production of precisely machined sensor structures combined with the inherent large signal output and thermal stability of quartz materials.
The SDI-170 IMU is designed for demanding, mission-critical, rugged environments and ideal for continuous use applications with no wear-out components, highly linear accelerometer performance, and longer life compared to competing alternatives. It is constructed with our latest generation quartz gyros, quartz accelerometers, and high-speed signal processing to achieve outstanding precision performance. The solid-state quartz sensors and hermetically sealed IMU construction provide reliable MTBF and a 20-year operating and storage life. Continuous Built-in Test (BIT), configurable communications protocols, electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection and flexible input power compatibility make the SDI-170 IMU easy to use in a wide range of higher-order integrated commercial and defense system applications.

A Quartz Micro-Electromechanical System (QMEMS) tactical Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is designed to deliver high-precision inertial performance for commercial, industrial, marine, and defense applications requiring exceptional accuracy and long-term reliability. This IMU is engineered as a performance-compatible replacement for legacy ring laser gyroscope (RLG)–based IMUs, maintaining full form, fit, and functional compatibility while offering the benefits of modern solid-state quartz sensor technology.
The QMEMS tactical IMU achieves gyroscope bias stability of 1°/hour and accelerometer bias stability of 1 mg, along with a low Angle Random Walk of 0.02°/√hour. These performance levels are maintained across a wide operating temperature range of –55 °C to +85 °C and under high-vibration conditions, making the unit suitable for demanding mission profiles. At the core of the system are dependable QMEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers manufactured using repeatable, high-volume precision production processes that ensure consistent performance and quality.
Quartz sensing elements provide inherent advantages, including large signal output, excellent thermal stability, and superior linearity. These properties enable highly accurate accelerometer performance and reduced sensitivity to environmental stressors compared to alternative technologies. With no moving or wear-out components, the solid-state design supports continuous operation in mission-critical environments without degradation over time.
The hermetically sealed construction of the quartz sensors contributes to a long Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and supports a 20-year operating and storage life. Integrated system features such as continuous Built-In Test (BIT) enable real-time health monitoring, while configurable communication protocols allow seamless integration into higher-order navigation, guidance, and control systems. Additional design elements, including electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection and flexible input power compatibility, further simplify integration and deployment.
By combining tactical-grade performance, rugged environmental capability, and long service life, QMEMS tactical IMUs provide a reliable, modern inertial solution for advanced commercial and defense system applications.
